Summer School Programme 2017

Introduction to jewellery making Monday 10th July - Friday 14th July, 10am - 4pm

Levels: all. Price: £550 including all materials apart from personal piece

If you are a beginner at jewellery making or would like to refresh your skills, this course is the perfect place to start. It will give students a thorough grounding in tools, machinery and introductory techniques followed by an opportunity to make a unique silver ring. Cabochon stone setting will be followed by some time to create a personal piece: this could be a chain, a bangle, a pair of earrings or some cufflinks.

Shape, structure, colour   Monday 17th July - Friday 21st July 10am - 4pm

Level: intermediate. Price: £550 including base metals

This exciting and exploratory course is aimed at returners, and those who would relish the opportunity to explore form and surface decoration in their work. It will be a journey through small-scale forged structures, anti-clastic raising and foldforming. Days four and 5 will be spent experimenting with the processes of mokume gane, married metals inlay, keum-boo and some patination recipes.

Students can work on their own pieces or follow set projects.

Stone setting  Monday 7th August - Friday 11th August 6pm - 9pm

Levels: all. Price: £275 including materials 

This lovely course will guide you through a suite of stone setting styles that you have been desperate to learn, all in one week!

Running every evening from Monday to Friday, we will cover cabochon, tube, gypsy (or flush) and tension settings, finishing off with studying the beautiful tradition of pearl knotting on to coloured silks. 

Students are welcome to attend one-off sessions within these courses if they have an interest in a particular technique and space allows.

An opportunity to learn a foundation of bench skills or brush up on chosen techniques, this six week Tuesday evening class welcomes learners of all levels. All equipment and base metals included in the course fee with guidance given on purchasing precious metals. These rolling blocks are programmed to run throughout the year. 


Make a silver ring 10am-5pm Saturday 7th October 2017

Level: Beginner.   Price: £110

Learn the basics of jewellery making: use copper to explore a range of techniques suitable for applying textures and finishes, then make a stunning silver ring to your own design and size. All equipment and materials are included in the course fee.


Soldering tips and practice   10am-5pm Monday 2nd October and Saturday 9th December 2017

Levels: Intermediate/advanced (minimum 10 tutored workshop hours experience)

Price: £110

Use base metals to explore the technique of silver soldering by practicing complex joins and creating hollow forms. All equipment and materials included in the course fee

Taster half-day: make a pair of silver cufflinks  2pm - 5pm next date tbc

Levels: all. Price: £55 including materials

An opportunity to learn some introductory jewellery skills and come away with a pair of cufflinks to your own design. A lovely way to spend a Thursday afternoon.

Taster half-day: tension setting 10am - 1pm Wednesday 26th July 

Levels: Intermediate/advanced. Price: £55 excluding silver

Suspend a small, round, faceted stone in between a slot cut in to a silver ring, then set it - as if by magic. A breath-taking and enchanting technique

Anti-clastic raising: make a silver bangle 10am-5pm Sunday 17th September 2017

Levels: Intermediate/advanced (minimum 10 tutored workshop hours experience)

Price: £110 excluding silver

Experiment with the beautiful technique of anti-clastic raising to create undulating and twisting forms in base metals before applying them to sheet silver

Intermediate Jewellery day: make a personal piece  10am - 5pm Thursday 6th July, Monday 9th October, Thursday 7th December, Thursday 14th December and Thursday 21st December

Levels: intermediate/advanced. Price: £110 per day excluding precious metals.

This course offers students the time to discover their own style of jewellery making, fine tune techniques they are particularly drawn by and discover their own rare individuality. A fascinating and rewarding journey, leading to a finished piece.  

Forged Jewellery  10am - 5pm Sunday 12th November

Levels: all. Price: £110 including base metals

Having trained in architectural metalwork as well as jewellery design, I run this class for partly selfish reasons...using an anvil and hammers, we will have the opportunity to manipulate metal to create twists, circles, curves and joints in base metals, employing blacksmithing skills to forge small scale, wearable forms.

A great follow-on class from Stone setting 1, the techniques of channel and claw setting are offered on this two day course. All equipment and materials are provided to produce a sample of both of these stone setting styles


Stone setting 3 10am-5pm Friday 8th September 2017

Levels: Intermediate/advanced (minimum 10 tutored workshop hours experience)

Price: £110

Learn how to create a tapered collet mount, solder it on to a workpiece and secure a round, faceted stone in to the setting on this one day course. All equipment and materials are included in the course fee to produce a sample of this setting style


Etching and photo-etching for jewellers 10am-5pm Saturday 14th October 2017

Levels: All.   Price: £110

Explore the magical technique of etching on to metal using resists and Ferric Nitrate. Learn how to apply your own photographs, text and patterns on to jewellery. All equipment and materials are included in the course fee


Casting for jewellers 10am-5pm Saturday 21st October 2017

Levels: All.   Price: £110

Use water to create beautiful organic silver forms. Reproduce the shape of an object or 'master' by impressing it into delft sand then filling the cavity with molten silver. All equipment and 20gms of silver casting grain included in the course fee


Wirework, beads and pearls 10am-5pm Saturday 23rd September 2017

Form, cut and solder jump rings to create a variety of chain styles on this one day course. Explore bead stringing and pearl knotting on to beautifully coloured twisted silk threads. All equipment and base metals included in the course fee

Explore the techniques of forging, press-forming and carving wooden formers to create a silver spoon to your own design and size

Hinges, rivets, tabs and screws...cold connections are fantastic fixing mechanisms that are alternatives to soldering. They offer the addition of movement and a variety of materials to a piece of work such as wood, leather, paper, fabric, resin and shell
